Multi-camera recording: capturing talks and stages in full

In a multi-camera recording, two or more cameras film the same event at the same time from different angles, such as a talk, a panel discussion or a press conference.

Definition

In a multi-camera recording several cameras run in sync. Typically one camera holds the wide shot of the stage, one the close-up of the speaker and, where needed, a third covers the audience, slides or a second speaker. Sound is recorded separately and ideally straight from the microphone or mixing desk.

In the edit the picture switches between angles, so a long speech stays lively and no passage is lost when one camera is briefly repositioned. The method comes from television and is used today for conferences, keynotes and stage programmes at trade fairs.

What it means for exhibitors

A talk by your managing director, a product presentation on the show stage or a press conference cannot be repeated. With a single camera you have to choose between overview and closeness, and every pan shows. Several cameras deliver both and turn the recording into a video people still enjoy watching later.

For exhibitors it is important to settle early where cameras may stand, whether an audio feed can be taken from the stage system and whether the organiser has its own recording rules. These are often in the exhibitor manual or agreed with the stage operator. Also decide which versions you need: the full recording for the website, short excerpts for social media or a summary of a few minutes. If the talk takes place on your own stand (booth), plan space for the camera positions when the stand is designed.

In practice

Before the start we set up the cameras, check light and sound and coordinate with the stage crew. During the recording every camera keeps rolling, so each angle is available in the edit. If you give us the file, slides can be inserted directly.

At Pixer multi-camera recording is part of what we offer for conferences and stage programmes. Because the effort depends on duration and the number of cameras, we quote a fixed price for it. Short excerpts for social media are delivered within 24 hours, with subtitles on request.

FAQ

Common questions

How many cameras does a talk need?

Two cameras are enough for most talks: a wide shot and a close-up. For discussions with several people, a third makes sense.

Is sound taken from the stage system?

If the organiser allows it, yes. Otherwise we record with our own wireless microphones.
