A wireless microphone system consists of a transmitter and a receiver. It sends the voice from the microphone on the speaker to the camera or audio recorder without a cable.
A wireless microphone system has a small transmitter, usually connected to a clip-on microphone, and a receiver on the camera or recorder. The speaker wears the microphone discreetly on their clothing, and the transmitter goes in a pocket or on the belt. The signal travels by radio, so the person can move freely.
In film and event production, wireless systems are standard for interviews, presenting and talks. Alongside analogue systems, digital ones are now common, and many of them also record internally to provide a backup copy.
Trade fair halls are loud. A camera microphone picks up neighbouring conversations, announcements and music just as much as the voice of the person you are interviewing. A clip-on microphone sits a few centimetres from the mouth and keeps the voice clearly in front. For interviews, customer statements and product explanations that is the difference between clear and unusable.
For you as an exhibitor this means planning interviews with time to fit the microphone, and choosing clothes that take a clip. Very rustling fabrics and heavy necklaces can cause noise. At large shows many exhibitors and stages use radio equipment at the same time, so it helps if the crew checks frequencies on site and can switch if there is interference. A quiet corner of your stand (booth) makes the job easier still.
Before an interview we fit the microphone, do a short sound check and set the levels. During the conversation one crew member listens in, so any noise is noticed straight away and an answer can be repeated if needed. With two interviewees, each gets their own microphone.
At Pixer we always use wireless systems for interviews and talks, with an extra recording as backup. That keeps the sound clean in a full hall and allows precise subtitles in English, German, Arabic or Persian.
No. A collar, button placket or lapel where the small microphone can be clipped is helpful.
In quiet rooms sometimes. In a trade fair hall it picks up too much background noise.
