INTERMODELLBAU is the largest trade fair for model making and model sport worldwide: four days in Dortmund with model railways, aircraft, ships, cars, RC models, steam engines, card models, clamping bricks and plastic kits, plus display layouts, demonstration areas and competitions. One in five visitors comes from abroad. The subject is tiny and meant to look big — macro, depth of field and the layout own lighting decide whether a model looks like a model or like reality.

A model in 1:87 scale is an object of a few centimetres whose details — rivets, lettering, weathering — only become visible when enlarged. We photograph with macro lenses, at the model eye level rather than from above, and use focus stacking when a whole vehicle needs to be sharp. The result is pictures in which a locomotive looks like a locomotive and not like a toy. For manufacturers with a novelty programme we set up a table rig on the stand and photograph series with our own light and a neutral background — images for catalogue, online shop and dealer portal.
Display layouts have their own light: day-night cycles, lit houses, street lamps. This light must not be washed out. We photograph layouts without flash in the light the builder set, and lift only where shadows swallow details.
Model making lives on motion: trains running, model aircraft in the demonstration hall, ships in the basin, RC trucks on the course, steam engines under pressure. We film layouts with slow camera moves at model eye level — creating the impression of standing in the middle of the scene — and demonstrations at high frame rate for slow motion. From that we cut vertical clips for YouTube Shorts and Instagram, where the modelling community meets, and a 30-second highlight of your stand.
Manufacturers and clubs from the Netherlands, the UK, Italy, Eastern Europe and overseas are briefed in English.
Thursday is the quietest day: time for macro shots of novelties, layout shots in their own light and stand overviews without crowds. Saturday is the strongest day with full halls, demonstrations and buying moments. A four-hour package on Thursday covers novelties and layout; a full Saturday with macro shots in the hour before opening covers product, demonstration and crowds in one day. Highlight video and first images are delivered on the evening of the shoot day.
Novelties at model eye level, sharp throughout — images for catalogue and online shop.
Layouts in the builder own light, no flash, day-night cycle preserved.
Moves at eye level through the layout, demonstrations in slow motion, vertical clips for YouTube Shorts.
Shelves, layout and lighting before the doors open, with no visitors in frame.
Full aisles, collectors on the stand and club conversations at the weekend.
Statements from manufacturers, builders and club members with radio mics, subtitled.
A post with your stand while the show is still running gets seen and shared. That is why every package includes finished photos and video within 24 hours after the event ends — first images usually the same day. Two revision rounds included.
A sample from our production: the event recap for your website and LinkedIn — below it, native 9:16 footage for Reels, Shorts and Stories, shot in parallel with the main coverage.
