At a trade fair your best customers come to you. A testimonial filmed on the stand saves a separate shoot at their office and often sounds more natural. Here is how to choose customers, ask the right questions and set up in a noisy hall.

A customer testimonial usually means a separate appointment: travel to the customer, a free room, a day in someone’s diary. At a trade fair the customer comes to you. They are already in the hall, dressed for business and in the middle of the topic, and fifteen minutes on your stand (booth) is an easier request than a filming day at their company.
There is a second advantage. On the stand, a customer talks about your product next to your product. The setting explains itself, and the answers often sound more spontaneous than in a meeting room. Examples are on our testimonial video page, including the stand statements from Sunakin at Vapexpo Paris 2025.
For exhibitors who travel to Germany from the Gulf, Asia or the US, the show is often the only realistic chance to film European customers at all. Planning it well turns a few minutes into material you can use for a year.
Send the questions in advance, but no written answers. Customers who prepare notes sound as if they are reading.
A testimonial is a small story: how things were, why the customer decided, what changed. These questions lead there:
Ask for full sentences that repeat the question, because the interviewer’s voice will be cut. Figures in the answers, such as savings or volumes, need the customer’s approval before they appear in a film. A longer list is in our guide to testimonial video questions.
Sound comes first: a clip-on microphone on the customer, the loudest noise source behind them and a quick check on headphones. If your stand has a meeting room or a quiet back corner, use it for the interview itself.
| Element | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Location | Meeting room or stand corner, with your logo or product softly in the background |
| Camera | Main camera at eye level; a second angle makes cuts in the edit easier |
| Light | A small light to the side of the face, because hall light is often flat |
| Eye line | The customer looks at the interviewer, slightly past the lens |
| B-roll | The customer at the product, in conversation with your team, arriving on the stand |
| Time | 20 to 30 minutes per customer, including set-up, interview and b-roll |
The b-roll matters as much as the interview. It shows the customer and your product together, and it covers cuts in the edit. For general interview technique, see our guide to on-stand interviews.
At Pixer, interviews are included in the Full Day package. For the smaller packages, an interview and an extended 90-second film can be added for €190. Our crew on site is two or three people, so the recording does not interrupt the sales conversations around it.
Get written consent before the recording: who is filmed, for which uses, for how long, and confirmation that the customer’s company agrees. Our guide to consent for on-stand interviews includes a template.
After the show, the customer sees the edit before publication. Two revision rounds are included, which leaves room for a correction from their marketing team. One testimonial typically gives you:
Subtitles make the clips work without sound and in other markets. Decide the languages when you invite the customer, so they can answer in the language in which they sound most convincing.
No separate shoot at their office. Fifteen minutes on the stand are easier to arrange.
Choose customers with a clear before and after, and mix the roles.
Two to three weeks ahead, with a time slot, the planned use and their internal approval.
Open questions in that order, answers in full sentences, figures only when approved.
Meeting room or corner, clip-on microphone, side light, b-roll with the product.
Written consent before, the customer’s approval of the edit after.
Plan 20 to 30 minutes per customer, including microphone, interview and a few shots with the product. The interview itself often takes about ten minutes.
Start with easy questions, keep the interviewer next to the camera and let the customer look at that person, not the lens. Nobody has to get it right in one take.
Yes. We conduct interviews in English, German, Arabic and Persian and add subtitles for other markets. Chinese subtitles can be delivered via translation partners.
Often yes, especially in larger companies. Ask when you invite them, and let their marketing or legal team see the consent form in advance.
Interviews are included in the Full Day package at €1,990 plus VAT. For the Basic and Professional packages, an interview and an extended 90-second film can be added for €190.
Unlimited usage rights are included. How long the customer is happy to appear is agreed in the consent; check it again if the person changes jobs.
