Definition

In a vertical video the picture is taller than it is wide, in a 9:16 ratio. It fills a smartphone screen completely when the phone is held normally. Platforms such as Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, TikTok and stories are built for this format, and LinkedIn also shows portrait videos in the feed.

The classic 16:9 landscape format remains important for the website, presentations and YouTube. A vertical video is therefore usually an additional version, not a replacement. It is cut shorter, often between 15 and 60 seconds, and needs subtitles or text lines.

What it means for exhibitors

Many people watch trade fair content on their phones while on the move. A video that appears there as a thin strip looks weak. A vertical clip uses the whole screen, shows faces and products large and fits the formats where short videos are watched most today.

The key is to plan vertical from the start. Cropping a landscape video to 9:16 afterwards often cuts off the logo, people or products. It is better to film certain scenes in portrait on purpose, or to frame them so that both formats work. Before the show, decide which channels you need clips for, how many and in which language. And plan a strong opening: within the first one or two seconds it must be clear what the clip is about, whether it shows your stand (booth), a product or a person.

In practice

On show day we film vertical scenes deliberately: faces in conversation, hands on the product, short statements to camera, movement through the stand. These shots work better in portrait than wide views. If you plan a demonstration or promotion on the stand, tell us the time so we can capture it in portrait on purpose.

At Pixer the Basic package includes one vertical clip, Professional two and Full Day three. The clips come with subtitles, in English, German, Arabic or Persian on request, and are ready within 24 hours after the show ends, so you can post them during show week.

FAQ

Common questions

Can a normal trade fair video simply be cropped to 9:16?

Technically yes, but important parts of the image are often lost. It is better to film portrait scenes on purpose.

How long should a vertical clip be?

Usually 15 to 60 seconds. What matters is a clear opening in the first seconds.
