Exhibition stand: the space where you present at a trade fair

An exhibition stand is the rented space in a trade fair hall or outdoor area where an exhibitor presents products and services. The term covers both the floor space and the structure built on it.

Definition

An exhibition stand has two parts: the floor space you book from the trade fair organiser, charged per square metre, and the structure that stands on it. That structure can be a few walls and a counter or a large build with meeting rooms, a kitchen and a stage. Whether you call it a stand (booth) or an exhibit, the principle is the same.

Stands are usually classified by the number of open sides: row, corner, peninsula and island stands. They also differ in construction, meaning system or custom-built. The organiser sets the rules for height, walls and technical installations in the exhibitor manual.

What it means for exhibitors

Your stand is your workplace for the duration of the show. It has to do three things: draw visitors in from the aisle, make conversations possible and make your brand recognisable at a glance. How well that works depends less on size than on clear decisions.

Keep open space on the side visitors come from and plan a quieter area for longer meetings. Your logo should be visible above the heads of the crowd. Products you want to sell belong at eye level and need their own light.

Think about the time after the show as well. The stand exists for a few days, but you use the photos and videos of it for a whole year: on your website, in LinkedIn posts, in sales material and when planning the next fair. A stand that looks tidy and well lit in photos pays off twice.

In practice

On the show day you see whether the concept works. That is why we photograph the stand twice: before the doors open as a clean overview without visitors, and later with real conversations in progress. The first shot shows the architecture, the second shows that people actually come to you.

For video we film wide shots from the aisle, details of products and logo, and scenes at the counter. It helps if boxes, bags and cables have disappeared before the first photo. The guide Preparing your stand for photos explains how.

FAQ

Common questions

How big should an exhibition stand be?

That depends on your goals, your budget and how many staff will work on the stand. For conversations, what matters most is that visitors can step in without having to stand in the aisle.

Can a small stand still look good in photos?

Yes. On small stands we work with details, tighter framing and conversation scenes. Tidiness, light and a clearly visible logo make the difference.
