Island stand: the free-standing exhibition stand open on all four sides

An island stand is an exhibition stand surrounded by aisles on all four sides, with no neighbouring stands. It is visible from everywhere and offers the most design freedom.

Definition

An island stand stands free in the hall. All four sides border aisles and there is no shared wall with a neighbour. Visitors can walk all the way around and enter from any side. The US term island stand (booth) describes the same thing.

Island stands are usually larger spaces and are mostly custom-built, often with meeting rooms, a stage or a second level. Organisers usually charge the highest surcharge for this stand type. Permitted heights, rigging from the hall ceiling and safety clearances are set out in the technical guidelines of each fair.

What it means for exhibitors

An island stand is a stage for your brand. It only works if it is thought through from every side. There is no back; every side is the front for some visitor.

Work with a central element that is visible from a distance, such as a tall logo tower or a banner hung from the hall ceiling, if the venue allows it. Divide the stand into zones: open areas for passing visitors, product presentation, quiet spots for negotiations and a closed core for storage and kitchen.

Plan enough staff so that no side looks unattended. And plan lighting that reaches the whole stand evenly. On large surfaces, dark zones are particularly noticeable in photos. A fixed contact person on the stand who keeps track of appointments and visitors helps a lot.

In practice

We show an island stand from several perspectives: wide shots from all sides, elevated angles where the hall allows, and details of each zone. The architecture shots are taken before the doors open; scenes with visitors, demonstrations and stage programme follow during the day.

For video, camera moves around the stand work well, as do sequences that lead from outside to inside, from the aisle to the conversation at the table. If there is a programme on a stand stage, multi-camera recording can make sense. More in the guide Stage talks at trade fairs.

FAQ

Common questions

Does an island stand need more than one photographer?

Not necessarily. For large stands with a stage programme or parallel appointments, an additional videographer can make sense. We clarify this in advance based on your schedule.

Can an island stand be photographed from above?

Only from places that are accessible for it, such as a hall gallery or the upper level of a stand. Ladders and lifts require approval at most fairs.
