Custom-built stand: the exhibition stand designed for your brand

A custom-built stand is an exhibition stand designed and fabricated specifically for one exhibitor, often in timber or mixed construction. It offers full design freedom but needs more planning, budget and build-up time than a system stand.

Definition

With a custom-built stand, the design is created for one brand and one specific space. Walls, ceilings, counters and fittings are made to measure. Free-form shapes, special materials, integrated screens or a stage are possible, as far as the venue's technical guidelines allow.

Custom stands are usually designed and built by a stand builder. Some parts can be reused at later shows, but many stands (booths) of this kind are made for a single event. Build-up and approval therefore need more lead time.

What it means for exhibitors

A custom-built stand is an investment in impact. To make it pay off, the stand should impress not only on site but also in photos and video, because that is where most people who were not at the show will see it.

Discuss with your stand builder where the stand looks best from. Is there an angle from the aisle that shows logo, architecture and products together? Is the lighting planned so that faces at the counter are well lit and not silhouetted against a light wall?

Dark surfaces, high-gloss floors and purely coloured light often look striking in person but make photography hard. A neutral base light on the conversation areas is usually enough to let colours act as accents while skin tones stay natural.

In practice

With custom stands we almost always start with architecture shots before the doors open: wide views from several angles and details of materials and fittings. Exhibitors and stand builders often use these images for years.

Later in the day come conversations, demonstrations and scenes on stage. For video we film slow camera moves across the stand to show the space and combine them with close shots of people. The guide Stand design and the camera explains what matters from the lens's point of view. It helps to plan a quiet window for this in which stand staff are not in the way.

FAQ

Common questions

Is a photographer especially worthwhile for a custom stand?

Yes. An elaborate stand exists for a few days. Good architecture and conversation photos make it usable afterwards for your website, sales and references.

When do you photograph the architecture of the stand?

Ideally before the doors open or at the end of the build-up day, when nobody walks through the frame. Access times are listed in the exhibitor manual.
