Visitor traffic: how many people pass and enter your stand

Visitor traffic is the number of visitors who pass or enter an exhibition stand within a given period. It varies by show day, time of day, location in the hall and programme.

Definition

Visitor traffic describes how busy a stand is. People often distinguish between passers-by in the aisle and visitors who actually step onto the stand. Both depend on many factors: the position in the hall, the distance to entrances, stages or catering, the show day and the time of day.

Traffic can be measured with simple tally sheets, with counting systems or indirectly through the number of leads captured. Many exhibitors only estimate it, which is often enough for planning. What matters is comparing the figures across several shows.

What it means for exhibitors

Visitor traffic is not constant throughout the show. There are quiet and busy phases, and the peaks fall at different times depending on the fair, the hall and the programme. If you know your fair, you usually know when the rush is greatest.

Plan your staff around the traffic. At peak times everyone should be on the stand (booth); breaks belong in quieter phases. Meetings with key customers are better placed at times with less activity so that there is enough calm for the conversation.

High traffic alone is not success. What counts is how many passers-by turn into conversations. A clear offer, visible from the aisle, and attentive staff increase that share.

Write down your observations so that you can plan better next time.

In practice

For photos and video, visitor traffic is one of the most important factors. Stand overviews without visitors are taken in the quietest moments, usually before opening. Images showing a busy stand, on the other hand, need the hours with the most activity.

We therefore plan the shooting day around the expected traffic and adjust it on site. The guide Photo and video schedule on show day describes which time slots work well. For calm shots, the guide on stand photos without visitors helps. Tell us when demonstrations or stage programmes are planned, as these moments often draw the most visitors.
