Image rights is an umbrella term for all rights that exist in a photo or video: those of the creator, of the people shown and, where relevant, of third parties, for example for brands or designs.
Image rights are not a single law but a combination of several areas. First there is the photographer's copyright, from which the usage rights granted to the client derive. Then there are the personal rights of the people shown, in particular the right to one's own image and data protection.
At trade fairs, third-party rights also matter: brands, logos, designs and products of other exhibitors visible in the background, as well as the organiser's rules on photography at the venue.
For exhibitors this means a trade fair photo can only be published without worry when all sides are settled. You need usage rights from the photographer, consent or another legal basis for identifiable people, and you should not put other stands and products at the centre of the picture.
A simple order helps in practice. Get comprehensive usage rights confirmed in writing. Obtain consent for interviews, portraits and images in which individual visitors are the focus. Tell your stand (booth) team about the shoot in advance. Check the exhibitor manual for the organiser's rules on photography and filming. And make sure other companies' logos do not appear as if they were endorsing you. This text is an overview, not legal advice; for specific questions, consult a lawyer.
On show day a lot can be solved through framing: visitors in the background out of focus, conversations photographed so that only your team is recognisable, other stands outside the frame. Where people are the focus, we ask and document their agreement.
At Pixer you receive unlimited usage rights to all photos and videos. We handle the rights of the people shown together with you, for example with a short consent form for interviews that we agree with you before the shoot. That way the material is ready to publish when it arrives.
That depends on how recognisable and how central the people are. For portraits and interviews you should obtain consent. If in doubt, take legal advice.
No. Usage rights are one part of image rights, namely the rights the creator grants to you.
